It's All In The Cards

A few fun and freaky facts about playing cards: Playing cards date back as far as the 9th Century in China; early production was possible due to the invention of woodblock printing. Decks of 52-cards featuring Jacks, Queens, Kings, Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs, and Spades are known as French-suited cards and are the most common cards found in the Western world. Variations on the suits include: bells, acorns, leaves, clovers, pikes, cups, coins, and swords. The colors black and red are thought to represent day and night. The 4 suits are believed to correspond with the 4 seasons. There are 12 court cards (4 Kings, 4 Queens and 4 Jacks) which might represent the 12 months of the year. Each suit has 13 cards, which corresponds to the lunar cycle each year. There are 52 cards in a deck, which mirrors the number of weeks in a year. If you add up the numerical values of each card (King = 13, Queen = 12 ... 3,2,1), you get 364; add 1 joker, you get 365; add the other joker, you get 366, the number of days in a leap year.

We worked with four of our favorite artists to illustrate the face of each card. Each artist was given a suit and each illustration corresponds to the value of the card. A huge thanks to Tara, Lauren, Liana and Angela for bringing this idea to life!
