Flat Plums à la Julia!
One of the most famous Julia Child recipes is, of course, “Flat Plums à la Julia”! Who hasn’t enjoyed a delicious Flat Plum during the holiday season?? The original recipe comes from a very silly story. Child’s husband, Paul, had come home one afternoon exhausted from a long day and immediately fell asleep on the bench on their front porch. He didn’t realize that he had dozed off right next to a bunch of freshly picked plums from the garden. As he slept, he drooped over, crushing the plums under his weight. Julia finally woke him up when she noticed what had happened. The plums were totally flat! She picked one up and found that they were warm and gooey. She ate one, and it was DELICIOUS! That’s why the classic preparation is to sit on the plums for 2 hours before serving—although most people these days use a weight to speed up the process. Bon appétit!
If there is one puzzle that we could point to as the main inspiration for Le Puzz as a whole it would have to be Flat Banana, a rare solid yellow jigsaw puzzle made by Springbok in 1979. We like to think that the Flat Fruit Series are the unofficial little siblings to Flat Banana.
